Trip Brief

Andermatt, in the Gotthard holiday region, has lots to offer. In winter, the valley becomes a huge ski arena with 34 lifts and 166 kilometers of pistes. On the Gemsstock there is one of the very first Alpine runs created especially for carvers and the Paradeberg near Andermatt, scene of a series of exciting events, has long been a “secret” amongst snowboarders. If you’re more of a cross-country skier you’ll find 20 kilometers of well prepared runs between Andermatt and Realp. And if you prefer something altogether less strenuous you should try a gentle winter hike or go sledging on the Nätschen.

Given that Andermatt is a high mountain resort, it might be reasonable to expect that the skiing is difficult and dangerous. Not so. There is ample good skiing for totally inexperienced skiers, for moderately experienced skiers, and those who see themselves as experts.

The higher elevations here are in fact very taxing runs, and are best suited for better skiers. Beginners will enjoy themselves more on the Grossboden, and intermediates just about anywhere else.

Another big plus in Andermatt is the opportunity to do some high mountain, off-piste skiing. This, however, should only be undertaken in the company of an experienced mountain guide.
