Trip Brief

Winter on the Schmittenhöhe provides an entirely new perspective on Alpine skiing. Mountains here provide first-class slopes, some of which possess an altitude difference of more than 1,000 meters from start to finish! Additionally, 61% of the slopes are covered with artificial snow to best serve carvers, snowboarders, and skiers. After all, Austria’s most beautiful panorama mountain does not succumb to hibernation! Winter hikers are most definitely welcome on Schmittenhöhe and will certainly find this location spectacular.

The trip to the Schmittenhöhe is particularly special, as we find ourselves in a hotel located directly on the slopes! Start your day before the lifts open with a nice, long run down to the village of Zell am See. Return to the hotel when the lifts open and enjoy a breakfast that includes eggs! At the end of the day, party at Schnaps-Hans, a typical Austrian après-ski bar.

Zell am See sits on a flat, semicircular piece of land jutting into the lake, and squeezed by the mountains wrapping the shore. Cream-colored buildings huddle around the well-preserved 13th-century church and the Vogtturm (city tower) which dominates Zell’s skyline. This wonderful landscape gives the area an ambience of a medieval mountain village rather than a bustling ski resort. Today the streets are still lined with unassuming shops, sport stores, well-stocked markets, and intriguing crafts shops. You’ll also find cozy cafés, guest houses, and restaurants filled with locals and tourists.
